Background

HCM Architects' home in a decommissioned fire station already has wonderful character.  However, deep basements and a poorly graded parking area contributed to basement flooding.

Goals/Concerns

HCM Architects wanted to remedy their drainage issues while creating an outdoor gathering space for business colleagues and client visits. Earth Wizards was originally brought into the project to fix the drainage issues of the pavement surrounding part of the building.  It was then decided to integrate the pavement drainage design with the design of a patio and rain garden.

Solutions

The patio was designed and installed by Jim Siirila Landscape Design.  The pavement was graded to direct stormwater into a dry creek bed that captures runoff from the patio and several downspouts.  The rain garden is designed for a 10-year (4.15 inches in 24 hours) rainfall event. The rain garden consists of two levels separated by a short copper accent wall adding a unique aesthetic to the rain garden.  Native plants were matched with the sun and shade microclimates within the garden.
